Syd Barrett died today.
Shine on.
Shine on.

They say it's better to burn out than to fade away; I think Syd's tragedy, if that's what it was, is that he wound up doing both.
As I said over at my place, the world's a little sadder and less strange today. He will be missed.

I'm half-expecting some sort of benefit concert thing to take place. would that be cool or not cool - I don't know.
in high school (early 80s for me) he was kind of sainted among a certain percentage of my friends.
what really went wrong, do you suppose? organic brain dysfunction exacerbated by LSD?

That fits with what I know: that he was a little unravelled to begin with, and the acid more or less pulled the thread completely.
A benefit concert would have at least great potential to be cool, depending on who they tapped for it. Of course, all the really good covers of that era of Floyd (at least that I can think of) are by pretty obscure artists - e.g., the techno "Bike" that surfaced in the 90s, or The Changelings' version of "See Emily Play."

That does sound familiar, but I can't remember who either.
I also have a rather cool recording of the Bevis Frond doing "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun," but I can't recall now if that Barrett-era or not.
